You don't. Nier: Automata has a self-contained story that is set far, far in the future relative to the first game. There are references here and there to the original, but knowledge of the first game is by no means a requirement for following the story of this one. Aside from Nier, I believe the Drakengard series is also related/set in the same universe.

the only thing that connects og nier to automata is that automatas 2nd half (probably wont be covered in anime cus this srason will end up w adam and eve) will tackle the replcant gestalt project which is the center of the lore of og nier
og nier is the result of drakengard 1 ending e where the battle transported to moden tokyo and shotdown by jet fighters and then the virus started that spearheaded the replicant gestalt project

but if nier anime covered the 2nd half ill be happy then

drakengard 3, drakengard 1, nier gestalt, nier replicant, nier automata is the order of the story but bro nier autoamata is 8400 ish years after nier replicant so it literally has little to anything to do with the story line.

Automata itself can be played without previous games, although you will miss many call-backs and homages to key elements of their universe's past i.e. surviving or changed characters

I can fairly say that Yoko Taro thought nicely about the way the plot will focus in the anime versus the way the action and story complement each other in the game. Here, the story emphasizes a loot more on the "human" nature of the robos and makes it a primary line for how the plot unveils in the anime. This is good, as the game (top tier on its own) did not explore this side of the story too much, mainly here and there on subquests and certain parts of the main story. The anime would not work if it would be the same thing as the game, because then you can just experience the same story with the game itself, so kuros for the producers and Taro so far.

We got a look at the Bros and Pascal, shit goes a tad quick (or the walking in the game made it look like a lot in between these). In about 5 more eps shit will go down big time.

And maaan, (spoiler ahead as the episode did not mention his name) Emil. TvT [He is that head in the tree] How could they do that to him? They combine Automata with Replicant (prequel of Automata) moments in the anime, this is so sad. In the game, 2B and 9S meet Emil in the mall as he falls from the ceiling, and it is only his rolling head as you might see xD. Then while exploring the city with side quests, he is part of a car that he runs around and you could buy things from him.

For those interested about him and if he will be a key part of the story, BIG spoiler so read on ur own risk he is not, but not certain what to say will happen now, as the anime is indeed not following the same story path, which is intriguing. In the game nothing was shown about how Pascal managed to be peaceful, it just mentioned the same thing as separating from the main machine lifeform network. Here in the anime, they made it so that he encountered Emil and his waves changed Pascal into who he is now. This is not in the game and it's amazing they did such touch. Maybe they will include him now in the main story somehow.

Aaaaand he is the last human to exist on Earth since millennia, and anywhere to be exact. Playing Nier:Replicant will explain things.
